To prevent freezing damage due to extreme winter weather conditions, take the following precautions.
In Maryland, we have seen our fair share of nasty winter storms over the years. Now’s the time to arm yourself with knowledge of what to do when the winter storms come.
Preparing landscaping for winter storms can be just as frustrating as dealing with the storm itself. However, taking precautions to protect your property is vital to ensure a healthy lawn and garden come springtime. The biggest threat to landscaping is ice. Ice forming on or around hardscaping, trees, bushes, and flowers can cause serious damage by killing the plants or causing tree branches and hardscaping to crack, break, and fall.
To prevent freezing damage due to extreme winter weather conditions, take the following precautions to ensure a beautiful landscape for spring.
Clean Up Fallen Leaves and Debris
Fallen leaves may look beautiful, but they can cause issues if left on your lawn all winter. Wet leaves can encourage snow mold and create a slippery mess. Rake leaves and remove debris to keep your lawn healthy and reduce the risk of fungal diseases.
Take Care of Your Trees
Pruning trees and shrubs helps them withstand winter storms. Trim dead or damaged branches that could break under the weight of snow or ice, which can harm nearby plants or structures.
If you have trees that are not yet fully grown, you should take some measures to protect them. Younger trees are more susceptible to cold-weather damage. Use burlap or protective wraps to preserve trees and small trees from harsh winds and freezing temperatures. This helps keep them safe until the growing season returns.
Mulch for Moisture Retention and Root Protection
Adding mulch around plants and trees helps retain moisture and regulates soil temperature. Mulching provides a protective layer that insulates roots, keeping them warmer during chilly months. For plants adapted to most climates, add mulch around their base to protect against cold damage.
Ensure Proper Drainage and Hardscape Safety
Ice accumulation from poor drainage is a major slip-and-fall risk – especially on paver patios, walkways, and driveways. When applying ice melt, ensure it is pet- and plant-safe. Check that downspouts and grading are directing water away from paths and foundation walls.
Consider adding drainage solutions before the ground freezes, which is typically around early December. In neighborhoods with sloped drives and intricate hardscape, drainage preparation protects your investment and your guests.
Check for Winter Pests and Diseases
Certain pests and diseases, such as snow mold, can appear during winter. Inspect plants and lawn regularly for signs of mold or fungus, and treat them as needed. Regular checks help you identify problems early and maintain a healthy landscape.
