We have compiled some tips to help you find the best ice melt for your needs.
At Lehnhoff’s Supply, we understand you want to keep your guests and property safe this winter.
This means investing hours of hard work into keeping your sidewalks and driveways free of ice and safe for walking and driving.
There are many different ice melt products available, and knowing which product or combination to use for a specific application can be confusing. Fortunately, we have compiled some tips to help you find the best ice melt for your needs.
What is Ice Melt?
Ice melt is a substance applied to surfaces to melt snow or ice. You can use it before snow and ice to prevent buildup or on top of existing snow and ice to break down the snow and ice into slush.
The ice melt mixes with water and lowers the water’s melting point. This prevents the water from freezing at higher temperatures, keeping your driveways and sidewalks clear for extended periods.
Applying ice melt to ice or snow dissolves into unfrozen water, forming a brine solution. This brine works its way down through the ice, melting and breaking it up. It also breaks the bond between the ice and the ground surface, allowing for easier scrape-off.
Magnesium Chloride Ice Melt
Since Magnesium Chloride is exothermic, it works well in colder temperatures. It is also hygroscopic (water-attracting), making it a fast-acting ice melt.
Magnesium Chloride is less corrosive and slightly more eco-friendly than calcium chloride or sodium chloride. However, since Magnesium Chloride is salt-based and contains chlorides, it is corrosive; therefore, make sure to keep it away from children, pets, and plants.
Understanding the Different Percentages of Magnesium Chloride Ice Melt
TruMelt’s magnesium chloride ice melt comes in varying percentages of magnesium for different applications. It can be easy to feel overwhelmed by these various numbers, so here is a quick breakdown of what each percentage represents.
3% Magnesium Pellets
TruMelt 3% magnesium is a premium blend of 97% screened sodium chloride and 3% magnesium pellets. This mixture melts effectively down to 0°F. TruMelt 3% is screened to an optimal crystal size for maximum traction and accurate spreading. With no large crystals, TruMelt 3% is clump-free, making it easy and efficient to apply.
TruMelt 3% is lightly tinted with a non-staining green dye, enhancing application accuracy and visibility. It is non-staining and safe for sidewalks and near entrances. In addition, TruMelt™ 3% is safer for pets and turf than calcium-based products. If applied at recommended rates, it will not burn vegetation or pets’ paws.
10% Magnesium Pellets
TruMelt 10% magnesium is a premium blend of 90% screened sodium chloride and 10% magnesium pellets. As a premier choice for both commercial and residential applications, TruMelt 10% melts effectively down to a low temperature of -10°F due to the inclusion of 10% magnesium.
TruMelt 10% is safer for concrete than other, less concentrated blends due to its low freezing point. Using 10% magnesium pellets lowers the freezing point, minimizing freeze/thaw cycles and providing greater protection against spalling and chipping.
12% Calcium Flakes
TruMelt 12% is a premium blend of 88% screened sodium chloride and 12% calcium chloride flakes, making it the top choice for commercial applications. Due to the inclusion of 12% calcium flakes, it melts effectively down to a low temperature of -20°F.
The 12% calcium flakes lower the freezing point, minimizing freeze-thaw cycles and providing greater protection from concrete damage, such as spalling and chipping.
While TruMelt 12% is a highly effective blend, it is not recommended for use around pets or in areas with extensive vegetation.
20% Magnesium
TruMelt 20% is a premium blend of 80% screened solar salt and 20% magnesium pellets. Due to the inclusion of 20% magnesium pellets, it melts effectively down to a low temperature of -12°. It is the most free-flowing ice melt on the market and is non-staining, making it safe for sidewalks and floors.
This minimizes freeze/thaw cycles and provides more protection from concrete damage, such as spalling and chipping. Additionally, TruMelt 20% is safer for pets and turf due to the gentle nature of the magnesium pellets.
