Erosion is something that gardeners and homeowners must face everywhere, even in Monkton. Things like rain, wind, and snow can all contribute to erosion. While we typically think of soil erosion on a large scale (think mountains and valleys), we can observe the process on a much smaller scale in our own backyards. The topsoil on your property is likely subject to conditions that cause erosion, and without proper care and attention, you may find that you have less dirt on your property than you used to. Here are a few things that you can do to help prevent the erosion of topsoil on your Monkton property.
Stabilize Your Topsoil
If you have hills or valleys that are made of topsoil and have no vegetation growing on them, consider stabilizing them with burlap or jute netting. The simple addition of a groundcover can go a long way in making sure that your soil stays put. You should also strongly consider planting groundcover plants on bare areas. Many native plants can act as a groundcover, and their root systems and foliage can keep your soil from blowing or washing away. Using a soil stabilization method is the first step to keeping erosion at bay.
Another essential step you can take to prevent erosion is to take a hard look at your irrigation system. Sprinkler systems and other irrigation methods that are rough on dirt can wash your soil away over the course of the year. Methods like drip irrigation are much less aggressive and are less likely to disturb or displace your dirt. You should also assess the amount of water that your irrigation system is distributing. Too much free-flowing water can accelerate erosion.
Add More Topsoil
Finally, consider adding more topsoil. If your property has already experienced erosion, adding more topsoil can help restore your land to its former state. Use screened topsoil from Lehnhoff’s Supply to fill garden beds, even out the slope on your property, and more! Once you have spread new topsoil and done your best to stabilize it, keep watch for the effects of erosion throughout the year.
