Preparing Your Landscape for Groundhog’s Day Predictions: Is Spring Arriving Soon or are We in for Six More Weeks of Winter?

Groundhog’s Day is fast approaching – what does that mean for your landscape?

Groundhog’s Day is fast approaching – what does that mean for your landscape? Will he see his shadow, giving you six more weeks of winter or will spring be on its way with no sign of his shadow? Even though there may still be a good amount of winter left, you can take measures to prepare for spring right now. That way, your landscape will be manicured and ready as soon as the weather warms up. And if spring visits us in six weeks, there’s a list of tasks you can do to be prepared in time.

Tasks for 6 More Weeks of Winter

If Punxsutawney Phil wishes another six weeks of winter, be sure to follow these tricks of the trade.

  • Maintain your mulch beds. If you notice mulch beds are getting low, replenish them to keep them safe for the rest of the season. Remember you don’t need to add a lot of mulch, just enough to cover the plant and tree roots.
  • Prune for regrowth. On a warmer winter day, consider pruning your woody trees and bushes back and watch them bloom this spring.
  • Save your trees from snow. Snow can be extremely heavy and can result in straining or breaking branches.  Gently shake the snow off to prevent severe damage.
  • Turn the soil on a warmer day. It is the perfect opportunity to turn your soil while it is thawing, allowing for unwanted insect eggs to be exposed before they set in your garden. While the soil is thawing you could  also prep and improve it with fertilizer treatments.
  • Keep your design in mind.  While you are inside, jot down a plan for what landscaping updates you wish to accomplish this spring.  Start discussing your plans with a professional landscaper to bring them to life,
  • Clear away debris. Remove all sticks and remaining leaves. Take your time and be gentle with your rack as your grass is still dormant.

Tasks for the Quickly Approaching Spring Season

If it’s happening and spring is on its way, you’ll have six weeks will come and go quickly, so start planning now.

  • Address winter lawn damage. With all the snow this winter, check for snow mold, a common fungus that develops under snow that causes patches during the winter. Treat the lawn with fungicide.

  • Prepare all of your landscaping equipment for spring. Give your mower a tune-up, get your mower blades sharpened, and check on the fuel and oil levels.

  • Launch early spring lawn care. Organize a good yard cleanup. Plan to reapply fertilizer, and if necessary, a reseeding layer. Give your lawn a light drink if it doesn’t look like it’s coming out of dormancy.

  • Keep up with the weeds. Before any plants are able to be placed in the ground, pull all weeds from your flower beds, around perennial bushes, and in between stones or hardscape.

  • Divide your perennials. Hostas or garden mums are easy plants to divide at their roots and can thrive on their own.

  • Start with hardy plants. Eager to plant? Plan on veggies and plants that won’t mind a few cooler spring days. Try spinach, sunflowers, radishes, and lettuce. Shortly thereafter, add kale, carrots, and cabbage.
