Summer is a time for bonfires at dusk. You can also build a campfire if you plan on sleeping under the stars. A small campfire might be all you need if you live in Parkville. But you can’t do any of that without some high-quality firewood. Here’s how you can get it ready for fall.
Look around your yard for a place to store your firewood. Be sure it’s in a spot that gets plenty of sunlight. This ordinarily wouldn’t be a problem during the bright, sunny days of summer. But as fall arrives in Parkville, the days get shorter, and there’s less sunlight during the daytime. Don’t leave your firewood piled on the ground. Build a platform for the firewood and stack it up instead. That way, you won’t expose your wood to as much rot and mold which can weaken it.
Once you start stacking, make sure the stacks aren’t too close together. Otherwise, your firewood won’t dry out quickly enough. Your firewood will also dry out more quickly if they can get enough air, so while a windy day in Parkville isn’t a good time to have a bonfire, at least it’s good for the firewood you’ve collected.
Properly stacking your firewood also adds some seasoning. This seasoning helps lend the wood that wonderful smell that will make you want to start up the fire pit every single night until the summer ends.
Still, during the late summer and early fall, there will be plenty of rain. You’ll need to keep a tarp to cover the wood to keep it from getting too wet. Before you can start stacking the wood, you’ll need to chop it first. Use smaller pieces as firestarters and then use larger pieces to stoke the fire once it is lit.
Your Firewood is Ready
So after doing all this, how can you tell your wood is ready? Look for some of these qualities: the pieces are light; they’re short; the ends are dark; and the wood makes a hollow sound when you clunk them together. Most importantly of all, you’ll want to be sure that your firewood lights more easily than it did before.
