Grab Some Topsoil and Regrade Your Yard Ahead of Fall Turf Season

Grab Some Topsoil and Regrade Your Yard Ahead of Fall Turf Season

Consider regrading your property with topsoil this season to create the perfect blank canvas for grass.

October’s cool weather is a welcome reprieve for cool-season grasses in Maryland. Homeowners can expect cool-season grasses to reach their peak this season, and the hospitable conditions are also ideal for overseeding and creating new lawns. However, not every property is ready for grass to take root. Uneven slopes and poor grading can cause water to pool in some less-than-ideal places around your property, leading to severe problems for your home, your grass, and your wallet. Topsoil, grass seed, and heaps of planning can help you establish the building blocks of a lush, level lawn this fall.

Grading and Drainage are Essential for Lawn and Home Maintenance

Poor drainage can wreak havoc on every part of your property. Water pooling around your home’s foundation can create major structural issues, and standing water anywhere on your lawn puts your grass at risk of fungal diseases, root rot, and other problems. The best solution is a flat, even, and well-graded yard. Drainage solutions like French drains can help, too.

Regrading Your Yard with Topsoil

Regrading your yard is often an effective way to keep water from pooling around your home’s foundation, but it takes some serious planning, hard work, and truckloads of topsoil. Still, the process can be broken down into a few simple steps:

  1. Identify your yard’s high points and low points. If your yard is lowest near your house, that is where water will collect. This is the problem you’ll need to address.
  2. Determine the slope of your yard. This can often be accomplished using stakes, rope, and line levels.
  3. Fill the low spots with topsoil. Adding fill material near your home allows you to reconfigure your yard’s slope, directing water away from your foundation. Tamp the soil down to minimize slope changes due to settling soil.
  4. Introduce grass to the area if that’s part of your intended design.
